The Canton Authorities sefore agreeing to this #ug-

gestion, however, wished to stipulate that I should re-

cognise the legality of the seizures, which, as these

were fouried on a monopolistic proclamtion, I could not

consent to do. Moreover on the Company being pressed to

agree to these teme, it transpired that the exact amount

of stone seized was not know, but the total mount ra-

maining undelivered out of the amount contracted for was

152,750 tune. The Company then offered to waive their

claim of approximately 80,000 to 100,000 dollars, on con

dition the contractors were free to make delivery of

these 152,750 tons, thus disposing of all past contracts;

while future ones would be unde under the new conditions.

I informed the minister for Foreign affairs of this pro-

posal on December 3, requesting that a telegram be des-

patched to Canton accordingly.
